Talking and Walking with God

As I mentioned in an earlier post I've been reading Walking with God by John Eldredge. This is a book about his journey in learning how to hear the voice of God. I'm nowhere near finished, but based on what I've read so far, I highly recommend this book.

On another note related to that topic, each morning I've been reading from My Utmost for His Highest by Oswald Chambers. His teachings, although from the early 1900's, still hold very true today.

A quote I recently came across by Chambers helped me connect with the book by Eldredge.

"If we rely on the Holy Spirit, we shall find that our prayers become more and more inarticulate; and when they are inarticulate, reverence grows deeper and deeper."
~Oswald Chambers

That's a relief! To me this meant talking to God from the roots and depths my soul, not worrying about how it sounds...not just repeating prayers I've heard all my life. It may not be the prettiest prayer, but it is real and sincere. God knows my heart.

This leads me back to the first book. If I'm relying on the Holy Spirit to guide me, I will hear from God!

Psalm 95:8
Today if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.

Sometimes I wish he would just write it down for me. I pray and listen and don't hear the answer always. I know that's part of having faith that he hears me.

My Utmost for His Highest is the first devotional book I read when I became a Christian. Your post has made me want to pull it out again and read through it once again. It is a wonderful book so packed full of truth and wisdom.

As always, I love knowing about those "highly recommend" books:) Thanks for sharing and have a great day.

Great post, Ginger. This is why I sometimes have difficulty praying aloud. It seems to distract me from the deepest thought/feeling I'm trying to convey because I'm physically forming words. And yet I know praying out loud is good and useful. Utmost is a treasure, isn't it.

Hi Ginger,
MUFHH is one of my very favorite books. How fantastic it must have been to sit until such teaching, in person! Right now I am doing a bible study called "He Speaks To Me" by Priscilla Shirer. I want to hear the Lord speak to me so clearly and also take comfort in knowing that my heartfelt cries and prayers are just what He wants to hear from me. :o) Like you said, not saying prayers over and over again, but going straight to the heart of the matter and depending on Him for everything. :o)
Happy Friday!
Sincerely ~ Tricia Anne

I have to return to my Utmost for His Highest devotion. I tend to switch off with him and Smith Wigglesworth.

I enjoyed this dear sister.
