Playing in the Dirt

How you spell relief? Do you remember that old commercial way back when? For me, I'm talking stress relief.

When I was little, I used to love to play outside. Playing in the yard, riding my bike, setting up a pretend house or store on the porch was so much fun....took me away to another place and time.

As a little girl, another one of my pastimes was to play in the dirt. By day's end, I would be covered from head to toe in Eastern NC soil. I used to watch my mama as she would plant flowers, gardens, and even help plant the crops for harvest. It's a shame her love for sewing didn't rub off on me like that gray dirt.

I can remember I would run to the front door of our house to see if the plants in the field across the dirt road were coming up. There was just something magical about taking something so tiny, planting it and watching it grow.

Today I'm hoping if weather permits to play in the dirt. Not only do I need to relieve some stress, but playing in the dirt keeps me real and in touch with my roots.

Last weekend, I got started just a bit with some planting, but not much. Today I'm hoping to take the zinnia seeds from my mama's garden and plant in mine. My zinnia garden of course won't be quite as big as hers. She's plants enough so the whole community can pick and enjoy. I can remember when I was little she also planted irises, and the local florist would come from time to time and buy from her garden. Many of the irises still bloom around the old oak trees.

Mama, Daddy and Me...a couple of years ago in their zinnia and vegetable garden.

I'm also planning to plant coreopsis and lavender today, where I normally would plant my zinnias. Felt the need just to change things up a bit. Too, it is good for the soil.

This is just one way for me to work out the knots and unwind after a long week. How do you spell stress relief?

P.S. Take a minute to listen to the first song on my playlist called Homegrown Tomatoes. So fun!

oh my gosh - i love the song!!!!! and how appropriate for this time of the year!!!! BLT's are our favorite and just make it feel like spring and summer! I love the pix of you and your mama and daddy walking in the flowers!!! I can't grown "nothin" (also because the puppy is still eating everything as if she were a billy goat.)

Hi Ginger,

What a beautiful message. Loved the photos also.

As a child my oldest brother and I would play in the backyard at my Grandparents home which was our sanctuary. I would make mud patties and he would taste them. He was such a good brother. I wouldn't dare eat those mud patties which he called pancakes.

O the memories of times at our Grandparents home.

Stress relief for me is singing unto the Lord, a hot bath with a good book or my head on hubby's shoulder at the end of a long day.

Thank you so much for your sharing on my marriage blog. Love you.

I, too, enjoy gardening. It's a great stress-reliever! Something about working the soil and making things grow, I guess. I have not planted my zinnias yet, though. I better get to it!

We've been so busy with all of the preparations for Bo's graduation. We are having the Senior Banquet at our church tomorrow. My parents are coming for that. Then, there will be Senior Awards Day at the school, and graduation is just a couple of weeks away!

Enjoy the rest of your weekend! :o)

P.S. I love the song, and I LOVE homegrown tomatoes! BLT's are a favorite of mine. When I was expecting Billy, I craved tomatoes! I've planted several tomato plants this year, so hopefully we'll have plenty. :o)

Oh how fun! We are working on our yard right now. We needed new bushes for the front of the house and that has grown into a much bigger project than anticipated. Isn't that always the case?

Hope you get to plant your pretty flowers today! Love the pic of you in the garden with your parents!

Your posts are stress reducing too:) ALways relaxing. I like to get on my treadmill with my music and zone out or lay out on the patio and just look around me.

I loved my great grandma's house and the trees there. The garden reminded me of my sweet grannie who lived until 101!

LOVE the picts and a good garden!

What a fun song! I have to agree....there's just nothing like a home grown tomato. I rarely find any during the fall and winter that are any good. Makes me hungry for a good 'ole garden tomato. My hubby grows them, so in about a month or so I'll have plenty.

Me, I kill every plant and flower that's under my care. It's so sad.

I used to play in the dirt when I was a little girl.
One time my sister and I made my mom an ash tray??? (she didn't smoke??) :) out of dirt and water and when it hardened we spray painted it silver. Isn't that funny?

I loved this post!

I love the song and I love the picture of you with your parents! I don't think I've ever seen that many zenia's planted in rows like that. Beautiful! I'm sure your Mom always had lovely flower arrangements. Now I want to do that too. Poor hubby!
